I offer no apologies. Robert Heinlein was fond of Star Trek. And this site is about science fiction in general, and RAH in general. So here’s a HD version of the latest trailer for the upcoming J.J. Abrams directed Star Trek prequel. Woo Hoo!
And the New York Times has a pretty good article about the trailer and four scenes that Abrams is showing to select audiences.
What I learned from the clip and descriptions of the scenes is that in some respects, Abrams isn’t exactly following cannon in the strict sense of the word. We’ll see how much this makes it hard for me to enjoy it. I am such a fanboy.
When I first started to read about the movie at aintitcool. com and other sites, I confess to being more worried than anything else. Since the original Trek series I had become increasingly apprehensive when each new version of Trek came out. I tolerated Next Generation for a while then simply could not handle it any more. I stopped watching the movies and I stopped watching, after briefly sampling, the spin-off series. They were just so PC and so lacking in drama they were a waste of time. Compared to Blake’s 7 (by the 80’s I had become a convert to British Sci-Fi), Neo-Trek was lame. So when this prequel was announced and I started to see some of the early stills, my reaction was “Oh God. Not Star Trek meets Tiger Beat. Are we to be spared nothing?” But I have to confess as least visually this trailer is appealing. I think it will work better with younger audiences, obviously the target, than those who recall the classic Trek, but I’m okay with that — as long as there is drama and characterization. What concepts. So I am suspending judgment for now. It may work. Here’s hoping it does.
