Los Angeles Times: Aside from being one of the most influential sci-fi writers ever, what did Heinlein ever do for anybody?

This is what you do when you are a hack writer for the Los Angeles Times and you’ve been assigned to write something on the 100th anniversary of Robert Heinlein’s birth, and the fact that his archives are being places online: You fill the article with nothing but quotes from his critics. Heinlein can’t possibly be worth a damn because he was insufficiently liberal and politically correct.

Back to the Moon or shoot for Mars?

Heinlein’s “The Menace from Earth” gets a mention in this New York Times blog post about whether the United States should return to the Moon or shoot for a Mars landing.

Personally, I don’t care … just PICK ONE and DO IT.

Heinlein is evoked here in a column abut property taxes:

This video of a prototype [tag]powered armor[/tag] rig in use is just too cool to be believed. [tag]Juan Rico[/tag] from [tag]Starship Troopers[/tag] would approve. There’s no direct mention of Heinlein, but there ought to be.

Heinlein, TANSTAAFL evoked to defend gas tax

Heinlein is used in a blogger’s argument against cutting [tag]gasoline taxes[/tag]:

In Robert Heinlein’s The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, the author comes up with the concept of TANSTAAFL (There Ain’t No Such Thing as a Free Lunch). Dr. Paul, in his article for the Free Liberal, seems to ignore that concept. Gas and diesel taxes, however painful, go toward the building, maintenance and rebuilding of our highway infrastructure, along with any tolls enacted for the same purpose …

Cutting what is essentially a user fee for drivers (thus forcing the government to either borrow the money or raise taxes somewhere else) is hardly a libertarian solution.
